After the Storm: Our Coastline, Our Home

On 12 April, our coastline felt the force of the storm.

Across the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel, wild weather moved through with heavy rain, strong winds, rough seas, and waves that reminded us just how powerful the ocean can be. For those of us who live near the coast, love the coast, or have grown up with salt air as part of everyday life, storms like this are more than just a weather event — they leave a mark.

Beaches changed shape overnight. Sand shifted. Dunes were cut back. Driftwood washed in. Tracks, accessways, and familiar corners of the shoreline looked different after the sea had moved through.

It is always humbling to see the coastline after a storm. The same ocean that gives us calm mornings, summer swims, beach walks, surf checks, and family memories can also arrive with force and reshape the land in a matter of hours.

For Salty Surf & Co., the coast is more than a backdrop. It is part of who we are. From Cooks Beach and Whangamatā to Ōhope and the wider Bay of Plenty, these places inspire our designs, our colours, our story, and the relaxed coastal lifestyle behind our brand.

After the storm, there is always a quiet reminder to respect the ocean, protect our beaches, and appreciate the beauty of the places we call home.

The coastline may look a little different now, but its spirit remains the same — wild, beautiful, resilient, and worth caring for.

As the clean-up continues and our beaches slowly settle again, we are reminded why we love this part of New Zealand so much. The coast gives us so much: freedom, fresh air, connection, and a sense of belonging.

And sometimes, after the storm has passed, that connection feels even stronger.
