Ōhope Beach: Local Events Worth Wandering Out For

There’s something special about Ōhope in the quieter moments — the palms cutting across the sky, the long silver line of surf, and that easy beach-town feeling that makes you slow down without even trying.

Ōhope Beach has long been loved for its 11 kilometres of walkable white sand, stretching from the Ōhiwa Harbour entrance through to West End. It is one of those places where a morning beach walk can turn into coffee, a market visit, a catch-up with friends, or a lazy afternoon watching the tide roll in.

And over the coming weeks and months, there is plenty happening locally for visitors, whānau, and the Ōhope community.

Ōhope Craft Market

The Ōhope Craft Market is always a favourite for a relaxed weekend wander. Expect local makers, handmade goods, food stalls, friendly faces, and that classic small-town market feel. It is a great place to pick up something unique, support local creatives, and enjoy a slow morning near the beach.

Quiz Nights at Ōhope Beach Tavern

For an easy midweek outing, the ŌBT Quiz Night runs weekly on Wednesdays from 7pm at Ōhope Beach Tavern. It is casual, social, and a good excuse to gather a team, grab dinner, and test your local knowledge.

Beach Karaoke and Pool Nights

Ōhope Beach Tavern also has regular social events, including beach karaoke and pool competition nights listed on the Whakatāne events calendar. These are the kind of laid-back evenings that suit Ōhope perfectly — relaxed, fun, and right by the coast.

Whakatāne Kiwi Trust Night Walks

For something a little different, keep an eye out for Whakatāne Kiwi Trust night walks in the Ōhope and Whakatāne area. These guided evening experiences are a beautiful way to connect with the local ngahere, learn more about our native wildlife, and enjoy the magic of the bush after dark.

Make a Day of It

One of the best things about events in Ōhope is that they do not need to be rushed. Come early, walk the beach, stop for coffee, browse the market, or head over to Ōhiwa Harbour for a change of view. West End is always a favourite for surf watching, while the harbour side offers kayaking, fishing, walks, and peaceful water views.

Whether you are local, visiting for the weekend, or just passing through from Whakatāne, Ōhope has a way of turning a simple outing into something memorable.
